Queen's Solar Design Team

The Queen's Solar Design Team is an interdisciplinary team of students who have a passion for innovation and sustainable design. QSDT will design a solar-powered tiny house that competes in the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon Competition. In addition, the team will host educational sessions for the Kingston community and restore the Solar Education Centre located on West Campus.

Note: All positions require no experience, and we encourage students from all faculties to apply!

The Mechanical Team Lead is a position for those wanting to develop skills as engineers and as leaders! They will oversee the design of the mechanical components of the house including the heating, cooling, and plumbing systems. They will optimize the systems to aim for a net-zero design.

Requirements:

  • Interest in mechanical engineering and sustainable design.
  • Experience with CAD software is an asset but not necessary.
  • Has good leadership skills, works well with others, and is eager to learn.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading the mechanical design of the house.
  • Targeting energy efficiency using active and passive heating + cooling systems.
  • Creating models and calculations related to energy and water usage.

Members will gain experience in:

  • Leadership and Communication.
  • Mechanical system designs, AutoCAD
  • Hands-on experience with solar panels and heating systems.
