About QGEM

The Queen’s Genetically Engineered Machine (QGEM) Team is the Queen’s University chapter of the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM). QGEM is an undergraduate research and design team that uses innovations in the fast-evolving field of synthetic biology to tackle current real-world problems related to medicine, industry, the environment, sustainability, and more. Historically, our team of interdisciplinary students has earned gold and silver medals and nominations for special awards amongst teams such as Yale, Harvard, and other Canadian institutions like the University of Toronto.

QGEM is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Director to lead, mentor, and manage the 2024-2025 team. The QGEM Director leads the team in developing an innovative synthetic biology project, ensuring all aspects—from concept to competition—are seamlessly executed. This project is then assessed and judged at the annual iGEM competition, with a chance to win medals and special awards.

General Requirements:

  • A flexible weekly schedule with an eagerness to put forth quality work
  • A background in biology, biochemical engineering, biotechnology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Passion for synthetic biology, biotechnology, or bioengineering and a drive for pushing the boundaries of scientific innovation
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills
  • Adaptability in addressing project challenges, and a proactive approach to seeking solutions
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently, ensuring the project progresses on schedule
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to mentor team members and manage team dynamics

Responsibilities:

  • Develop the initial project concept in collaboration with project supervisor, Dr. Chris Lohans
  • Decide on team structure, defining roles and responsibilities for each sub-team (Wet Lab, Dry Lab, and Human Practices)
  • Recruit and hire team members, ensuring a well-rounded, capable team with the skills and commitment required for project success
  • Oversee the progress of all sub-teams, ensuring consistent updates and deadline adherence
  • Lead fundraising efforts to secure essential project funding, including competition fees and travel fees
  • Budget resources and identify funding opportunities to support team expenses
  • Recognize and accommodate team or individual weaknesses by rearranging tasks, directly assisting, or providing additional resources or mentorship as needed
  • Maintain a strong understanding of iGEM competition guidelines, deliverables, and judging criteria, ensuring all sub-team goals and activities are in line with these requirements.)
  • Maintain regular communication with project supervisor, advisors, and external experts to receive guidance, troubleshoot challenges, and validate project decisions
