The Queen's Vertical Farming Team, founded in 2019, is Canada's first undergraduate engineering team of its kind. Recognizing this rapidly emerging industry, QVFT is designing and building a functional, software-automated aeroponic vertical farm on Queen's University campus. The majority of existing research in this field is conducted privately and is thus inaccessible to the public. Through its open-source approach, QVFT aims to democratize vertical farming knowledge and research.

The Mechanical Team at QVFT focuses on the physical design, testing, and construction of the vertical farm. Designers on this team will be responsible for creating precise CAD models of our vertical farm systems, as well as sourcing physical materials for the project, such as pumps, valves, and piping. Additionally, a mechanical designer’s duties include assisting in the construction of the vertical farm, which involves routing piping, assembling grow boxes, and mounting fixtures to the farm frame. An interest in working with tools, piping, and hands-on tasks is an asset for this role.
