Job Posting: Director of Engineering and Director of Business Positions - 2024 Solar Decathlon

The Queen’s Solar Design Team is excited to announce opportunities for two dynamic individuals to join our student club as the Director of Engineering and Director of Business for the 2024 Solar Decathlon competition. This competition challenges teams to create innovative, energy-efficient building designs that meet the nation's demand for zero energy buildings. You can read the competition rules here:

Competition Description:

The Solar Decathlon Design Challenge is an annual competition where teams develop residential or commercial building designs over one or two semesters. The designs are evaluated based on their ability to meet the evolving demand for zero energy buildings. Teams choose to compete in one of the following divisions:

  1. New Housing (NH)
  2. Retrofit Housing (RH)
  3. Attached Housing (AH)
  4. Multifamily Building (MB)
  5. Office Building (OB)
  6. Education Building (EB)

Position 1: Director of Engineering

As the Director of Engineering, you will lead the technical aspects of our team's participation in the Solar Decathlon competition. Your role will include:

  • Overseeing the development and implementation of the engineering design strategy, including growing a team that is responsible for:
    • Coordinating with team members to ensure the integration of high-performance engineering systems including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and structural systems.
  • Evaluating different technologies and techniques for energy efficiency and renewable energy production, including both active and passive systems.
  • Collaborating with other directors to ensure the overall integration of the design.
  • Aiding with the final presentation

Position 2: Director of Business

As the Director of Business, you will be responsible for managing the non-technical aspects of our team's participation. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and executing a comprehensive business plan for our team, including growing a team that is responsible for:
    • Seeking sponsorship opportunities and establishing partnerships.
  • Managing the team's budget and financial resources.
  • Overseeing the life cycle analysis of the building, ensuring the marketability of the final product, addressing the needs of the community.
  • Aiding in the final presentation.


  • Currently enrolled as a student at Queen’s University in any relevant field of study (can be graduating December 2023).
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for sustainable design and renewable energy technologies.
