The Queen's Concrete Canoe Team (QCCT) is a multi-disciplinary design team rooted in civil engineering that designs, constructs and races a canoe primarily using elements of material and structural design. The canoe team will compete in May at the Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition (CNCCC). PLEASE NOTE: This posting is for ALL exec positions. If selected as Head of Concrete (2 positions), you will be responsible for overseeing the development and design of the concrete mix used in the canoe. The successful applicant will work alongside their Co-Head of Concrete to research and develop an understanding of mix designs, coordinate and plan weekly concrete mixes in Ellis Hall, test and record the capacity of concrete cylinders, and contribute results to the design proposal report. The Head of Concrete must attend weekly meetings with the executive team, and coordinate the procurement of concrete materials, scheduling and milestones with other exec sub-teams and the captains. At the discretion of the incoming captains, the Head of Concrete may also be responsible for supervising their own sub-team of general members. The successful candidate will develop a high-level understanding of the process of concrete mix designing and concrete testing throughout their term as Head of Concrete. Requirements Excellent time management and organizational skills. Good critical thinking and decision-making abilities. Strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. Independent, quick learner who is interested in all aspects of engineering design. Desire to learn about the varying properties of concrete and concrete materials. Familiarity with concrete mix design is considered an asset.
If selected as Head of Construction (2 positions), you will be responsible for overseeing the development and design of the canoe hull and foam mold. The successful applicant will work alongside their Co-Head of Construction to use modelling software such as AutoCAD, Solidworks and Rhino to develop a model of the hull to be used in the final design, test the model under structural and hydrological analyses, and contribute results to the design proposal report. The Head of Construction will also be responsible for coordinating the milling and assembly of the foam mold used to house the canoe, and procuring any materials necessary for the construction process. The Head of Construction must attend weekly meetings with the executive team, and coordinate scheduling, logistics, and milestones with other exec sub-teams and the captains. At the discretion of the incoming captains, the Head of Construction may also be responsible for supervising their own sub-team of general members. The successful candidate will develop a high-level understanding of modelling software, structural analysis and hull design throughout their term as Head of Construction. Requirements Excellent time management and organizational skills. Good critical thinking and decision-making abilities. Strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. The Heads of Finance will spearhead the creation of the team budget, ensuring the team finances are kept up to date, and dealing with the Bank of EngSoc. The Heads of Finance will collectively ensure imbursements are correctly dealt with through EngSoc and will play a key role in overseeing the development of the team's Dean's Donation application alongside the Documentation Head. They will also work closely with the Sponsorships Head to help them procure relationships with sponsors, also helping to put together a sponsorship package. The Heads of Finance must attend weekly meetings with the executive team and coordinate spending, logistics, and material procurement with other exec sub-teams and the captains. At the discretion of the incoming captains, the Heads of Finance may also be responsible for supervising their own sub-team of “Finance” general members alongside the Sponsorships Head. The successful candidate will develop a high-level understanding of budgeting and financial management.
The Head of Sponsorships will lead the team’s sponsorship efforts for the upcoming year, working closely with the Finance Heads while taking primary responsibility for external communication with sponsors and internal coordination with EngSoc to ensure timely and accurate payment collection. This role offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience in budgeting, financial management, and sponsorship strategy. The Head of Sponsorships is expected to attend weekly executive and captain meetings and may also supervise a sub-team of general members, depending on the discretion of the incoming captains. The ideal candidate will have excellent time management, organizational, communication, interpersonal, and client relations skills. A desire to learn about financial management and external relations is essential, and prior experience with budgeting, sponsorships, or communications is considered an asset.
Marketing Head is responsible for all concerns relating online presence for the QCCT. The marketing head is responsible for making weekly Instagram posts, bi-weekly Instagram updates such as reels to advertise events, updating website content to remain accurate with sponsorships and the continuation of the development of the quality of the website. The marketing head will be responsible for the management of our LinkedIn marketing posting such as personal executive shoutouts and posting to advertise the team members and recent efforts in design to contribute to the depth of the QCCT history. The marketing head is additionally responsible for sending out a weekly newsletter via email and will be in close relation with the Head of Documentation for these efforts to ensure clear communication of schedules and future events of the team. At the discretion of the incoming captains, the Head of Marketing may also be responsible for supervising their own sub-team of “Communications” members alongside additional exec members. The successful candidate will develop a high-level understanding of budgeting and financial management.
If selected as Head of Outreach, you will be responsible for overseeing communications and relations with both internal and external parties. The successful applicant will work alongside the other communication heads to organize outreach events with clubs such as Women in STEM (WiSE) and Engineering, National Society of Black Engineers, as well as local high schools and community clubs. The Head of Outreach must attend weekly meetings with the executive team. The successful candidate will also play a key role in general member recruitment and oversee planning and logistics for any team socials and events.
The Aesthetics Head will be responsible for ensuring the aesthetic of the chosen theme is maintained in the final canoe prototype. This included leading theme idea generation sessions, and once the chosen theme is determined assisting with merchandise development and a developing display plan for competition. Additional tasks include a design plan for the aesthetic of the final canoe (utilizing inlays for patterns, dye colours, etc.) and assistance in the design, decoration, and construction of the stands and display booth for competition. The Aesthetics Head will work collaboratively with the Concrete Heads and Construction Heads to ensure their ideas are feasible.
Documentation Head will be responsible for the master team schedule creation, meeting minutes, report progress as well as overall documentation of the team’s progress and events throughout the year. This position will require presence at all team events and the majority of team meetings to ensure clear translation between past ideas and actions to keep track of the progress of the team. This position will be responsible for communicating closely with the head of social media and responsible for clear scheduling to stay approximately one month in advance for the estimated schedule of events for the team. This position will be responsible for documenting using video and pictures to create content to be used for the social media head. his position will be responsible for ensuring the timeline of reports and deliverables for the year given in the CNCCC mailers are met with ease and documentation head is involved in ensuring each party has completed their designated role of the report. Attention to detail is key.
If selected as the Head of Communications, you will be responsible for overseeing the recruitment process for general members, maintaining and advertising on the team social medias, overseeing the development of the design proposal report, and planning team socials. The successful applicant will be responsible for distributing the workload associated with the design proposal report for the competition and ensuring its' completion. They will also be responsible for procuring general members by developing a recruitment system and advertising via social media. The Head of Communications must maintain updates to the team's social media pages, including Instagram, Linkedin, and Wix website. The Head of Communications must attend weekly meetings with the executive team, and coordinate the canoe theme, team socials, events, and design report procurement with other exec sub-teams and the captains. At the discretion of the incoming captains, the Head of Communications may also be responsible for supervising their own sub-team of general members. The successful candidate will develop a strong understanding of Request for Proposals as used in real-world engineering and high-level marketing skills.
