The mission of the Queen’s Aero Design Team is to provide unique opportunities to students at Queen’s University to learn, explore, & experience aircraft design and construction, in a team environment. The Queen’s Aero Design Team aims to develop innovative designs focused around heavy lifting and drone technology. We seek to improve members communication, leadership, and project management skills, as well as develop engineering and design skills.

The mechanical lead is responsible for all things structurally related to the drones we build. The position would require you to oversee general members, and work alongside them as a leader to create solutions to all of our mechanical design goals. For example, on one of our drones, the mechanical lead would work on designing and building the drone frame, the landing apparatus, the fastening components and more to ensure the drone is structurally stable and lightweight. The main purpose of the mechanical executive is to serve as a project leader to all team members, and to ensure the aerial flight systems designed are optimized for flight.

The mechanical executive should possess all of the following skills:

Must Haves

  • Willingness to learn new concepts and softwares
  • The 'want' to take on new challenges and problems
  • Leadership skills
  • Good teamwork skills
  • Outgoing and dedicated to the team

Although it would be nice for the executive to posses some hard skills such as CAD, the position does not require you to have any prior knowledge in these area. All we ask is that you be willing to learn these skills, and dedicate some time to learn them:

Nice to Haves

  • CAD and mechanical design skills
  • Ability to conduct FEA on simple structures using pen and paper, as well as CAD softwares
  • Ability to produce 3D printed parts and prototypes
